The Culture of Hockey: The Language, Humor and Traditions You Only Understand If You Know

WHERE WE PLAY JOURNAL · HOCKEY CULTURE
For the stories behind the game.
There's hockey, and then there's hockey culture.
If you've ever played the game, spent time around a rink, raised a hockey player, coached a team, or followed the game long enough, you know there's something different about hockey.
It's more than skating, scoring goals, making saves, and winning games. It's the friendships, the rivalries, the locker-room humor, the traditions, and a language all its own.
And some of that language? Well, you probably wouldn't understand it unless you've spent a little time around the game.
That's part of what makes hockey special.
It's More Than Just a Game
Ask a hockey player what makes hockey different, and you'll probably get more than one answer.
It's the early mornings. The cold rinks. The smell of the locker room. The sound of skates cutting into fresh ice. The excitement of a big game and the frustration of a bad bounce.
It's the teammates who become lifelong friends, the parents who spend countless hours in the stands, and the coaches who somehow manage to keep everyone focused when things get a little heated.
And then there's the humor.
Because hockey players have a way of finding humor in just about everything.
Welcome to the Language of the Rink
Every sport has its own terminology, but hockey has a vocabulary that can sound like a completely different language to someone who doesn't know the game.
Here are just a few examples.
Chirp
A chirp is a little verbal jab directed at an opponent, teammate, or sometimes even a referee. It's part of hockey's competitive personality. A good chirp can be funny, clever, and perfectly timed. A bad one? Well, that's just embarrassing.
Top Shelf
When a player puts the puck high into the net, that's top shelf. It's a favorite spot for a goal scorer and a place goalies would rather not see the puck.
Five-Hole
That's the space between a goalie's legs. If a shooter finds it, the puck is going home.
Apple
No, we're not talking about fruit. In hockey, an apple is an assist. Set up a teammate for a goal, and you've earned yourself one.
Biscuit
The puck. As in, "Put the biscuit in the basket."
Bar Down
When a shot hits the underside of the crossbar and goes into the net. It's one of those goals that looks even sweeter when it happens.
The Dirty Areas - Available Here
These are the hard-to-play spaces around the net and along the boards where players battle for position, loose pucks, and scoring opportunities. It's not always pretty hockey, but it's often where the hard work gets done.
Celery
A slang term sometimes used for money or cash in hockey culture. Like plenty of hockey slang, its use can vary from one group to another.
And that's just scratching the surface.
The Chirp: An Art Form of Its Own
If there's one thing that really gives hockey its personality, it's the chirp.
Hockey chirping isn't simply trash talk. At its best, it's quick, clever, and delivered with just the right amount of confidence.
It might be directed at an opponent after a missed shot, a teammate who just made a questionable play, or someone who has spent the entire game talking a little too much.
And sometimes, the best chirps come from the most unexpected places.
Of course, there's a difference between a good chirp and just being obnoxious. Hockey players generally know that difference.
A great chirp gets a laugh. A really great one gets repeated in the locker room long after the game is over.
The Unwritten Rules
Hockey also has its share of traditions and unwritten rules.
Some are about respect. Some are about competition. And some are simply things that hockey people understand without needing an explanation.
You respect the game. You respect your teammates. You respect the people who put in the work.
You know that blocking a shot isn't always comfortable, that the equipment bag isn't going to smell like roses, and that a trip to the rink can turn into an entire day before you know it.
And whether you're a player, coach, parent, or fan, you become part of that hockey community.
It's a community built around a shared love of the game.
You Don't Have to Explain It If You Know
That's really what makes hockey culture so much fun.
There are expressions, inside jokes, traditions, and moments that don't always make sense to outsiders.
But mention a five-hole, a top-shelf finish, a questionable chirp, or a little action in the dirty areas, and the people who know hockey will understand exactly what you're talking about.
It's a language that connects players and fans.
And sometimes, wearing that language is just another way of showing you're part of it.
Celebrating the Culture Behind the Game
At Where We Play Apparel, we believe sports are about more than what happens on the scoreboard.
They're about the people, the experiences, the traditions, and the memories that come with being part of the game.
That's why we love designs that celebrate the humor, personality, and culture of the sports we play. Our hockey chirp designs bring that same insider language, quick wit, and locker-room humor to life on apparel for the players and fans who get it.
Because sometimes a shirt says exactly what a hockey person is thinking without having to say another word.
And if someone gets the joke?
Well, they probably know.
